This position is best suited for an individual with front-of-meter, utility scale energy storage and/or renewable energy development, ISO/RTO, utility, or energy economic consulting experience who is seeking a growth role in the quickly evolving energy storage and renewable industries. You will be the expert on market design, fundamentals, and perform your duties by leading and managing the Siting and Analytics team.
Responsibilities:
Market Fundamentals:
- Robust understanding of North American electric market operations with a focus on energy storage participation
- Review and provide synopses on technical market design topics impacting BESS such as FERC orders, state-level policy, or other regulatory filings.
- Experience in operational planning, trading, and/or analysis of power generation portfolios in deregulated wholesale power markets. Understanding of energy market designs, including the use of Unit Commitment and Economic Dispatch models
- Provide regular market intelligence updates and monitor relevant transmission, generation, and load forecasts, for both market outcomes and competition.
Analytics:
- Able to run, modify, and build analytical tools
- Drive quantitative analysis necessary to inform strategic market and program portfolio decisions
- Understanding of the structure and availability of energy market data.
- Analytics and/or programming experience. Python specifically, with a focus on utilizing APIs and data science topics.
- Exposure to or experience with techno-economic analysis, e.g., curtailment studies, SCED, etc.
Project Siting:
- Manage the Siting and Analytics team members to inform internal view of wholesale power markets, support internal analysis of congestion, transmission, and revenue in relation to the firm’s BESS pipeline and acquisition opportunities, and aid the organization in its strategic evaluation of investment opportunities
- Lead and manage efforts to identify current and future economic opportunity in each market and thereby identify siting opportunities for energy storage assets.
- Consult in project development decisions for new site prospecting, including reviewing IRPs, planning studies, interconnection studies, locational transmission capacity, physical interconnection feasibility, and estimated project costs.
- Collaborate with development, transmission, land, and commercial teams to keep existing projects and new siting efforts on track.
- Experience with providing technical testimony in regulatory proceedings.
Regulatory Monitoring:
- Tracking and engaging in ISO/RTO and utility stakeholder and project-specific meetings and workshops
- Serve as in-house expert on transmission-related market design and regulatory issues, monitor key developments in these areas, and provide recommendations in these areas
Skills and Experience
- 5-10 years of experience within the electric power industry.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Effective at communicating technical topics to non-technical audiences.
- Prior experience in generation facility siting and analytics.
- Familiarity with energy storage technologies and applications.
- Ability to understand market tariffs, wholesale product methodologies, and stakeholder processes in ISO and non-ISO regions.
- Experience and knowledge of ERCOT/MISO/SPP including but not limited to: market design/regulatory framework, market products, market fundamentals, interconnection data, transmission planning processes, and related data sources.
- Experience in Enverus Panorama (formerly Marginal Unit), Plexos, PROMOD, or similar
- Proficiency in Python or similar coding experience
