Electrical Engineer (Avionics)

Storm4
⚡ Job Title: Electrical Engineer (Avionics)
💼 Industry: Space Systems
🌎 Location: Broomfield, CO (On-site, full-time)
💰 Salary: $100,000 – $140,000 annually (targeted range; final offer DOE)
⚡ Company Overview:
An early-stage space systems company building avionics for commercial deep-space missions. The team is designing the avionics suite for a prototype mission targeted to launch in the 2027 timeframe. This is a small, highly technical team where engineers own hardware end-to-end — from schematic to flight — and directly enable novel space resource and exploration missions.
⚡ Position Summary:
You will own core avionics subsystems (analog, digital, and power electronics) for small spacecraft. This hands-on role requires end-to-end hardware development: component selection for harsh/radiation environments, schematic and PCB layout in Altium, lab bring-up, test/validation, debugging, and system integration. You’ll work closely with avionics, software, and systems engineers and both learn from senior staff and mentor junior teammates.
⚡ Key Responsibilities:
- Select COTS vs. space-rated components balancing performance, lead time, cost, and radiation tolerance.
- Lead system-level trade studies to meet mission requirements.
- Create schematics and perform PCB layout in Altium Designer; coordinate fabrication and assembly decisions.
- Validate designs using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, FRAs when needed).
- Perform circuit simulation and analysis (SPICE) and document design decisions.
- Lead design reviews, iterate hardware after test results, and resolve cross-subsystem issues.
- Independently debug circuit problems and escalate complex system issues to senior engineers.
- Mentor junior engineers on circuit design, test techniques, and best practices.
⚡ Required Qualifications:
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field.
- 3–6 years hands-on hardware design and test experience (schematic, layout, bring-up).
- Proficiency with Altium Designer (schematic capture + PCB layout).
- Experience with circuit simulation tools (PSpice, LTSpice, or equivalent).
- Comfortable using lab equipment: oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, function generators, electronic loads.
- Proficient in Python or an equivalent scripting language for test automation and data analysis.
- Strong debugging/troubleshooting skills and ability to document technical work and lead technical discussions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; demonstrated cross-discipline collaboration.
⚡ Preferred Skills:
- Prior experience developing hardware for spaceflight or aerospace applications.
- Familiarity with radiation-tolerant design practices and component selection for deep-space environments.
- Experience with microcontroller systems (ARM Cortex series preferred).
- Background on early-stage, resource-constrained engineering teams.
- Experience making build vs. buy tradeoffs and coordinating manufacturing/fabrication.
⚡ Compensation and Benefits:
- Target base salary: $100,000 – $140,000 annually (final offer depends on experience).
- Equity incentives (participation in company upside).
- Medical, dental, and vision plans with buy-up options.
- Short-term and long-term disability covered.
- Basic life insurance covered.
- 401(k) plan.
- Unlimited paid time off — results-focused culture.
