A shift towards a circular economy is shaping the way materials are reused and redesigned. This transition aims to solve the growing concern around the rise in waste and demand that conflicts with finite resources. Moving away from the linear take-make-model that has been used since the Industrial Revolution, we investigate what is a circular economy and how it will direct us to a greener future.
As it stands, just 8.6% of the world is ‘circular’, but action is being taken to improve this figure. The EU recently launched its Circular Economic Action Plan to tackle waste, while pioneering brands such as Patagonia, Unilever and Stella McCartney have also embraced the
principles of circularity.
Circular Economy (CE) is built on the foundation of regenerative and restorative design, reinstalling the Earth’s overall system health, benefiting businesses, organizations and individuals, on a global and local scale. CE operates on three key principles, which all play a role in turning back the clock on detrimental damage to our planet; design out waste, keep products and materials in use and regenerate natural systems. The CE model offers a new chance of innovation and integration between natural ecosystems, businesses, our daily lives, and waste management.
